Saw many posts about brooder sizes. I need to build a brooder or brooders to handle 200 to 300 chicks at a time. Everyone says bigger is better, but what is the square footage I need, is there a formula x amount of square inches per chick?

Depends on how long you plan to have them in there and what breeds you're planning to raise.
I would suggest that you look into a 'hoop house' sort of setup that you can section off. Only use the back at first, then allow them into the next sections as they grow.

not familiar with "hoop house". will look into that. The breed will be high line brown cockerls or cornish x, or a local mix. We don't have a wide selection to pick from here. I was planning (but looking for advice) on keeping them in a brooder for 2 to 3 weeks and then moving them into 16 x 20 coops attached to 40 x 150 pasture/pens to free range in during the day. I'm in a tropical country so keeping the chicks warm is not the problem. I just need to keep them safe for the first few weeks. Just don't want to have over crowding problems.

I have built 6 brooders that all add up to about 24 sqft. is that enough for 250 chicks, with out over crowding?

A hoop-house is made from a heavy guage fence pannel (very stiff and rigid). They are usually 16' long by 5' high. You bend them into an arch - cover in hardware cloth and a tarp over the top - close in the ends (plywood works great) and with the addition of a door in one of the plywood ends, you've got a coop with a roughly 5'x5' floor. Set up several arches side by side and you've got a brooder that can grow with the chicks. I don't know how much space you'll need per chick. My brooder is about 2' x 4' and is (in my opinion) a little crowded for five 6-week old chicks.
