One of my chickens has been pooping this dark brown runny poop. I have five chickens and i'm not sure which one of them is doing it or whats causing it. I normally wouldn't worry except i saw it three times! If its the same chicken what could this mean? If shes pooping so often what illness could she have? My food is medicated i think and all the chicks are energetic and happy. One isn't really energetic and sometimes lies down but she still eats and drinks like she ought to and walks. She also runs occasionally. These are my first chickens and i'm so confused. I fed them yogurt and oatmeal mixed in with their feed in case it was diarrhea and that seemed to help a little but if it is diarrhea how long should i keep up with the yogurt and oatmeal?

How old are they? Are you giving them grit? I am new with chickens, so I don't know much, but I sometimes see runny brown droppings with my 8 chicks (5 and 8 weeks old). Don't know why but they all seem healthy. I do give them some greens and other scraps, and grit, but I haven't worried too much about it.

How old are they? Are you seeing any blood in the poop at all? Is the one chick that is acting slower always been that way or has she just started that? Chickens do what is called a ceacal poop every 8-10 poops, it is normal. The chart has pictures of the different kinds of normal poo, you might look at the pictures if that is what you are seeing. http://chat.allotment-garden.org/?topic=17568.0

They are a day away from becoming a week old. I haven't been giving them grit. That one chick just suddenly started to act slow.

And there is no blood. I'm only worried mostly because i don't know if this is the same chicken pooping that runny poop or not and if it is what does it mean and what should i do?

If you are giving them oatmeal they should be getting grit. I would stop with the yogurt and oatmeal, chicks really should just have their chick food. Were they shipped chicks? Can you separate the slow chick in the brooder to see if it is the one doing funny poops? I would check over the slow chick very carefully and see how it looks, is it a good weight and condition compared to the other chicks, be sure it is eating and drinking like the others. You might want to post in the Emergencies forum about it

Every time i give them the yogurt and oatmeal there is no runny watery poop. But when i don't there's the runny poop! I don't know what it could be and if the yogurt id helping how long should i keep it up so there's permanently no watery poop.

It has been awhile since this happened but I wanted to make an update. As it turns out it was one chick who was doing this repetivly. In the end it was found out cecal poop is okay. However when one chicken does it more than once every ten poops something is wrong. In the end I think one of them had cocci. I suspected it before and I knew it when I thought I saw red blood in one of the poops. So I did a milk flush. In short the milk flush helped greatly and the chickens are happy and alive today. I wanted to share this so that if anyone else comes across my page they can solve the problem they may be having.

The milk flush recipe is here and it's safe so even if your chicks don't have cocci it won't hurt them if you try it.

You can break it down into a smaller portion but this is as it was listed.

4 pounds of dried milk
2 pounds of corn meal
2 pounds of oatmeal
1 pound of bran

Feed this for 3-5 days with no other feed except some greens. The large amount of milk makes the chicks thirsty, causing them to drink. The milk sugar will turn to acid in the stomach and the extra added water will flush out the system.
