What do you mark your eggs with?

I was worried about the toxicity of a permanent marker on the egg since it's so porous, so I used pencil and made light marks. I may change this up for future hatches, but will decide when the time comes.

I used a sharpie last time but worried about it and it was blue and I swear I saw it bleed thru once the shells cracked open there was green inside. A pencil I am afraid of pressing too hard and puncturing. So this time I used a Crayola washable marker, I set this morning so it might not work but we'll see.

I'm new at artificial incubation (first eggs in the incubator!) but I've hatched lots of eggs under broody hens. I've always used a Sharpie to mark which eggs are hers. Never hatched a marked chick, so I figured it was fine.

I use a pencil to put an X on one side.

I've seen where people mark the air sack and circle where they think the pip will hit after candling. Why do the do that?
