I'll bet my first egg comes while I'm on vacation....because they're just like that :)

I have 7 chicks, all 18 weeks old at this point. I am leaving for vacation in one week, and will be gone for a week. I have my neighbor keeping an eye on my girls. I will be so bummed if my first egg comes while I'm gone!!! I have a SLW that seems to be ahead of the others as far as maturing. Her face/wattles/comb are really red, and her wattles are filling out. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she holds off a couple more weeks.

Some of my hybrid breeds (like a Golden Buff, or a Production Red, which is a mixed breed), they've started laying at 17 weeks. If any of your pullets do a very serious squatting pose when you reach out, then they'll probably start laying within two weeks. Seems like the larger the breed, the longer it takes them to mature, so your SLW might wait a bit longer......But you never know!

Will your neighbor take a pic of the first egg for you? Remember this, you may miss the very first egg, but there's always a first time for you to experience it. So don't be bummed if they start when you're gone. You'll still go out to the coop one morning and find eggs for the first time yourself. :)

I am in danger of my chickens laying their first egg while I am on vacation, also. And like you I told my chicken sitter she should have any eggs she finds while I am gone.

Except the first one, should it appear while I am gone. She has to save me the first one. Other than that, they're all hers.

I am tempted to tell her the same thing. I'm sure she won't mind, as, when I told her she could have the eggs, she didn't look to pleased...lol. She's one of those who is skeptical of them unless they come from the store ;)

Well, it did come while I was on vacation! I checked the girls when I got home Saturday and there was a lovely brown egg waiting for me. I'm not sure when it was laid, as the boys looking after the chickens didn't check the nest boxes like I asked. I didn't eat it since I wasn't sure how long it had been sitting out in the coop. I did crack it open, and it was a double yolker :) It appeared that my rooster has been busy too, as each yolk had the little white dot in it, that I've read indicates a fertilized egg.

One of mine started on Saturday and she has been a little machine, laying an egg a day since then. I was shocked. I stlil expect my blue egg layers to wait til I am on vacation...but now that I have at least one laying, I can live with that. My RIRs are taking their sweet time, although someone dug a big hole in the corner of the coop so maybe one is getting ready.

That's great that you've been getting one every day! I haven't gotten another one yet. I'm wondering if something is wrong, or if it is normal to go days in between. I'm not even sure which chicken it is, but if I had to guess I would say it's my Wyandotte "Oreo".
