Sounds like she is missing her friend, do you have other chickens or is she your only one?

I have 9 more chickens but 3 are busy being mommas but she used to be high up in the pecking order and only in these past few months has she been a lesser one in the group she isolates herself from the others I don't know what to do if I could bring back the other chicken I would she was my favorite out of all of them

Personally I like the sound of hens and roosters. Hens can be quite noisy especially in the morning and after an egg.

We recently had to re home our buff Orpington, Sven, he was very aggressive with our daughters 5 &7. Our neighbors were very disappointed! Most are elderly and loved hearing him crow. We replaced him with a bantam mutt, but free! Not nearly as beautiful, but So far so good.

I had a beautiful Rooster with my dominicker hers...He was so friendly/funny at first...As they all got older he was "protective" them and a pain in the butt to me. I really tried to keep her calm and debated over giving her away for a month. When it go to where I couldn't go out to the coop without her jumping at me I made the decision to enjoy the hens with out "Roo". My hems seem happier and I am too.

Pros to having Roos - Protection alerts hens when a predator is around so they can scamper to safety, Beauty, Fertilization, Alerts hens when he finds food

Cons - Crowing, If more than one Roo, they torture hens for constant sex --tear feathers off of preferred hens during mounting. had to make hen saddles for my girls as their backs were red and bare.

Don't underestimate the protection factor if your hens are free range.

If you're not breeding them don't do it. The owner of that rooster is probably trying to get rid of a problem.I've had at least 3 hens mauled to death by roosters. The roosters also tear up the backs of the hens causing sunburns and possible infection. Most of my roosters were Americaunas and a couple of red sex links. Hatched most of them myself and handled them. They're great for the first 6 months but after that look out. I've had 4 that became very hostile to me. They sneak up on you and attack from behind. Then there is the crowing. At first it's a novelty but that wears off after a week. Its a myth that they crow just at sunrise. They crow 24/7! If you have neighbors they will want to lynch you and the rooster. If you have more than one rooster they crow off key. I think they do it on purpose. Now if I get a rooster it gets sold off or butchered by 7 months. If you want protection invest in a fence.Don't complicate your happy flock! SMITTY
