I have only ordered from a hatchery one other time and 7 out of 7 were pullets. This time I ordered the rainbow layer's from Mcmurray. They sent me two boxes instead of one. All together I had 33 chicks. They are now 8 weeks old, all healthy. I gave 19 to a friend and kept 14. So far she has one roo that she knows of. Last weekend I gave away 3 that were obviously roosters. This morning someone was crowing. That's 5 so far and they are only 8 weeks. How many roosters should I have expected.

These were straight run, right?
That means 50/50 based on about 100 chicks. So, some hatches will be more than 50% roosters, some less. Also, McMurray will add a chick to orders over 50- usually male.

This year our home hatches have been heavily skewed toward males- about 75% male. However, our last hatch was all female, so go figure, won't know our total until the end.

You were either lucky on that first order, or (inadvertantly) ordered all pullets.

Not straight run. These chicks are suppose to be rainbow layers, all pullets. I would rather hatch but I did not want to deal with the roosters.

Chick sexing isn't always 100%. Contact the McMurray people. They may give credit for additional roosters. However, with the extra box of chicks, sounds like there may have been a mistake originally, so the roosters may be part of that mixup.

Both boxes said rainbow layer assortment. I am really just curious what a "normal" amount of roosters would be.

X2 on One Chick Two's advice. Murray McMurray (along with most hatcheries) guarantees 90% accuracy when ordering pullets, so they should reimburse you for the short tally of pullets.
