Sethanie says Hi!

RAISINS! I sat down outside the pen and tossed raisins at their feet. In 10 minutes I had a couple of them a foot away from me :) Thank you! It's the start of a beautiful friendship!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. We are here to help in any way we can. You have some nice looking birds, but I would be careful about your ratio of males to females. The recommended ratio is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. If there are too many roosters, it eventually leads to aggression, fights, battered and over-bred hens, and injuries (even serious or fatal ones). Also, I would run hardware cloth over the chicken wire on your pen (make sure and run it over the top as well, and a buried skirt around the outside of the pen to keep out digging predators). There are just too many predators that can either tear through chicken wire, or pass through the openings in the mesh. I know adding hardware cloth adds some extra expense to the pen, but it is cheaper that replacing your flock. Hardware cloth has saved many chicken owners a lots of tears. Good luck with your flock.
