I have had a quail breeding pattern in mind for quite some time now. The purpose is to keep them as far from related as possible. I tried to google it again as to confirm my plans were on track and I have had the hardest time finding it. Does anyone have any links or are there more than one possibility? Any help would be appreciated! thanks.

Bird genetics aren't so sensitive that you have to have all completely unrelated birds to have thrifty stock. You obviously don't want to cross siblings or do multiple generations of parent x offspring back to back, but you have some breathing room. I've experimented with a healthy amount of inbreeding working on color patterns, and was farther down the road than most people would go before I experienced fertility issues.

If you have 4 breeding groups of unrelated quail you should pretty much be able to breed forever without interbreeding as long as you keep notes and keep track of which birds are which. At the end of each year keep a new set of hens from each group and continue on.

edited to make more sense.
