This is what I noticed as possible symptoms .
First white dropping stuck to their feathers.
Maybe for a week. Then heads pointing to the sky mouth open like they are trying to choke up something. Then black droppings but not diarrhea. The weight loss but still acting relatively normal. Then starts the not eating but still drinking. Then death. This takes about 3 weeks. 2 have died. My husband checked them and the crop wasn't full of anything. We aren't experienced at necropsy.
One of them had a strange dark color inside and the eggs(?) inside looked shriveled. She was very sick for a week. Skinny!
The second hen had normal insides. She was sick one day found her dead in the morning. She was fat appeared healthy.
They are Rhode Island Red hens 3 1/2 years old. Any ideas?

Not real sure but it could be worms. They do get esophageal, tracheal, tape and crop worms. Could be Gapeworms which would make them reach up gasping for air. Would be worth looking into possibly worming your chicks. I ran into an article recently while looking into possible worms in my flock.... their run is right along a creek. Recently have lost two hens. We have tons of wild birds that hang around. Anyway, I don't remember where I found the article as I looked up many. Do some research on different chicken worms and wormers. Wish I could be more help. Currently I am still trying to save one of mine. Good luck and sorry you are going through this.

Valbazen or safeguard .
Gaping could be gapeworm or there is an infectious disease called ILT
Check the eyelids for redness.

Warning graphic pics.

Awesome link Fancychooklady. Thank you for that. There is good info on that. I was trying to find Safeguard for my chicks at TSC but they only have goat and horse wormers and Wazine for poultry. I was scared to get Wazine because it says not to use for layers for eggs for human consumption. I decided to try Rooster Booster Multi Wormer. It says that there is no egg withdrawal period but I worry about everything so I will not eat the eggs until they have used it all up.

The rooster booster might be fine I don't know.As for the safegaurd the goat or horse wormer is what your looking for. I use the paste 10% ,give them a pea size amount in some bread and repeat in 7 to 10 days. You will be using this off label but it is widely used for chickens.Maybe someone else can verify my advice just to be sure.

Your welcome. This one shows you how detrimental an overload of worms can be.

And this one is one for bookmarking. It will be a good reference for meds you may need in the future and dosage.

Thanks everyone. I'm sure now after worming them it was worms. No more neck snaking. I'm going to follow up and keep a reg schedule. I feel so guilty letting two die like that. Love my little hens
