my dad was raising five red chickens and two ducks in which one is a male ,he has past away and now I have no clue what to do with these birds...they were all raised together in a chicken coop that only has dirt along with the water and food I provide for them,,.Last week they all started laying eggs the color of white, pink and brown...they are scattered around the coop and they kep moving them around in new places..my question is can we eat these eggs or are there baby chicks and ducks in them..and if they are etable,,how long do we have to take them out of the coop and refrigerate them

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Sorry for your loss! Of course you can eat the eggs. If they are fertile you can still eat them. (The way to tell if they are fertile is to look at the yolk. There will be a bulls eye.)

You should collect your eggs at least twice a day. More in intense heat or cold. You can either refrigerate them right away for let them sit in room temp for a week and then but them in the refrigerator.

Good luck with your birds!

Also, be sure to check out our learning center

What is the temperature usually? Eggs can stay good for quite a while. Have you been bringing them in?

Welcome to BYC.

hi,, and the temperature outside is about 99 to 100 degrees . I have not brought any in because I wasn't sure what to do with them,,about four days ago there was only one now there is about thirty five..One of the hens is usually sitting on some and didn't want to bother her.So I guess its time for us to start bringing them in huh?

If your egg's are not in the direct sun they will stay good for several days but it sounds like your poultry are in need of a nesting box nothing fancy just a home and yes you can use just dirt in the box .....

See nothing fancy just a safe place ....

and yes they will aquire a lot of egg's as normal .......

Wish you luck with your poultry

If a hen is sitting on a number of eggs - she intends to hatch them. Do you have any roosters in the group. If NOT, none of the eggs will be fertile. Broody hens will even sit on nothing when their hormones stir up their "mothering" instincts.

I'm sorry that your father passed away.
