I recently got a button quail about a week ago and he's been pretty stressed and flighty. He's been in a tiny bird cage this entire week (now he's in a large 20-30 gallon aquarium with a mesh top). When I got home from a long car ride with him(I got him when I was out of town and stayed about a week before coming home) I noticed blood splatters on his bedding and a scab forming over his ear. He freaked out a few times during the drive. Could he have hit his head or something and what can I do? Also he is bleeding only from one ear. I can't afford an avian vet visit... The bleeding has stopped and he seems fine, although he seems to nap quite a bit, but maybe he's bored?

sounds like he bonked his head. keep him warm and be sure he is eating and drinking. He should heal up fine if he didn't hit his head too hard. And if he is the only bird he will be lonely. This could cause problems for you as he will start calling for a mate and sometimes it can be rather irritating. good luck

Thank you! He seems to be doing fine, eating, drinking, and bathing in his food. I understand that they live in pairs, but I haven't been able to find him a female, I went back to the place where I got him and the seller didn't have anymore button quails, so I am just hoping that he won't get too lonely if I spend time with him and give some stuffed animals :(

Put a mirror in the tank for him. He should be happy with that. Look on craigslist for female buttons and your local feed store. My female lost her mate earlier this year and was going crazy without him. I looked everywhere and couldnt find one so my brother bought a female coturnix they are both happily living together but I went to the feed store and they have male buttons.
