I'm new. Like, today new. And have zero chickens yet. In my area, the limit is three hens per household. I still don't know anything about chickens yet but I am wanting a chicken. A single chicken. I am wondering, psychologically speaking, if this is okay?? Do I need more than one? If so, are two enough? What's the bare minimum amount of chickens a person should have? I want to do this properly and will not have a chicken/chickens until I know everything to ensure a happy, healthy life for her/them!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. You need at least two chickens as chickens are gregarious birds and like company. Three would probably be best. That way if something happens to one of them, then the other two can still keep each other company. With a small number like that, you need to get all hens, no roosters, as a rooster will over-breed and batter that few hens. The general recommended ratio is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. If you purchase Black or Red Sex Link chickens, you can be certain that you are getting females as they can be sexed by color from hatching. With Black Sex Link chicks, the males are black with a white spot on top of their heads and the females are solid black. With Red Sex Link chicks, the males are whitish colored and the females are reddish colored. Also Sex Link chickens are hardy, friendly (especially the Black Sex Links), and egg laying machines. Good luck in getting your chickens.
