Hello, this is my first year of raising ducks. I have 7 Rouens, 2 khaki Campbell/Pekin mix, and 1 blue Swedish. I live on a farm with a pond. Currently my ducks are in 2 separated dog pens with chicken wire, etc. to protect them. My ground for them inside is no doubt ruined, but that's okay. I would appreciate suggestions on what to put down to have a much suitable ground. I've had people tell me sand.. but will that get too hot for them? What about rocks or stepping stones? I have kiddie pools and a large water trough for them to swim in which is making it an issue.

Having their pen on a slight slope, maybe 2 percent, so it will drain helps.

I use a combination of smooth pea gravel and sand under the swim pans - but the water runs off quickly into a shallow channel that goes to raised garden beds. The swim pan area is blocked off by a 2 x 6 board, flat side down - keeps the water from going over so much into the pen bedding, that is chopped straw topping composted straw (duck poo plus chopped straw, mixed by the ducks).
