Hi may sound like a stupid question but i thought best to ask before getting a load and putting it down, I've found a tree surgeon in my local area who will give me a load of wood chippings/bark to cover the large space i have cleaned at the back of the garden, there's no grass and i have put weed mat down due to it having alot of problems with weeds as a preventing method and bark seemed best to put on top as they love the stuff i buy in the pet store but its rather expensive, but what type of woods best and what should i avoid using? He has many different types available but wanted to make sure there wasn't any i should stay clear of, thank you

If this is truly for a chicken run, they're gonna have a field day digging at the landscape fabric you put down. they are going to be digging in the wood chips constantly and they will get down to that fabric.

It's been my personal experience that the chips you'll get from a tree guy will be very very course compared to what you might buy for landscaping, so consider that also.

Again, if this is for a chicken run eventually you'll have to clean it out and what will you do with all that slow to decompose wood? Also chickens will probably keep the weeds down for you, so you may be better off without anything unless you have drainage problems.

Ah right ok then and well the thorns i have weed killed and ripped up but i have some sort of vine that grows out there didn't no if they would eat it and if it was poisonous and yeah i thought it'd be courser than the shop brought stuff

Found out what the ivy is its hedera helix, English ivy. Which apparently is poisonous to chickens. Will they keep away from it? I've ripped all of it out but it may come back?

there's a really good chance that they'll just keep it scratched up so it won't grow if you've already pulled all the mature plants.

for the most part chickens tend to stay away from things that are bad for them, but that doesn't mean you can ignore these things, just that most times they do.

I don't have any English ivy in my run but I do have it around my yard and they just ignore it.

Yeah that'll be the same with me and I'll make sure its all out for sure then and, keep and eye out thank you :)
