Hello, everyone!!

I am very excited to join your group!! I am extremely new to this chicken rearing...but don't actually have a flock yet. I am in the beginning stages still.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am looking into getting 8 chickens...after we build the coop, that is.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
0

(3) What breeds do you have?
I would like to get some friendly ones...I want my 14 year old twins to enjoy them as well.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Completed a search to find out about chickens and how to raise them.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Well, I am a 4th grade teacher and love animals and always looking for a way to bring them into my classroom. Over the years, my family and I adopted a dog, cat, 2 ferrets, and koi in our pond out back. And the dog has a pet frog in the pond. ;)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a wonderful husband who puts up with my "love" for animals, even though he is not an animal lover. He always works hard to make sure our family is happy. He was actually the one who wanted to get chickens to begin with, and now that he has voiced his desire, I am willing to help make it happen!! We are so excited (perhaps me a bit more), but have LOTS of questions... I am glad I found this site. It looks great.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Lots of nice breeds out there....the Orpington breeds are some of my favorites. They are very docile, kid friendly, make great pets, very hardy and are great at laying! Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps fall into this catagory. Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, Wyandottes, to mention a few are also good layers and make great pets.

Definitely stop by our learning center for lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry. Mountain Peeps has left you with the link.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very thorough introduction. X2 on Black Australorps and Buff Orpingtons. I have had both breeds for many years (still have them) and never had an aggressive one in either breed. They are calm and gentle, and good layers (the Australorps are exceptional layers). My children, and now my granddaughter, made lap pets of them. Other calm, gentle breeds that I have had at one time or another are Silkies, Brahmas, Sussex, and Cochins. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
