Hello all! I've been reading BYC for about 3 months now but just decided to go ahead and join! So glad I did! I live in Harford County, MD and when we bought a house in the country, we decided to try to raise chickens. I'm a special education teacher and I have to say that the chickens have been such a wonderful stress relief for me! They can always bring a smile to my face. We only have 3 right now but I can truly see how this is addicting and I will be adding to my flock slowly. We have a Barred Rock, an Ameraucana, and a Jersey Giant. Originally we had a Rhode Island Red before the JG but I learned a hard lesson in free ranging when a fox grabbed her.

The JG is the youngest of the 3 and the BR is currently the only one laying eggs but I'm hopeful that the Ameraucana will be next.

We had our first soft shelled egg yesterday and this is why I'm glad I had been exploring BYC for months now! I didn't freak out at all like I would have if I didn't know that this was possible. Glad to be here!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

So glad you are enjoying your flock! Many times young layers will lay soft shelled eggs, eggs with no shells and all around funky eggs until they get their egg laying machines in gear.

Now is the time to get them on layer feed and some oyster shell on the side. Keep the oyster shell near the food and water so they can find it easily. If they require more calcium, they can pick through the shell.

Keep the treats to a minimum so they are eating plenty of calcium enriched layer feed.

Enjoy your new flock and welcome to ours!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Soft shelled eggs, eggs with no yolk, eggs with no shell, etc are all common in young pullets.

Be sure to feed them layer feed with either oyster shell or crushed, rinsed eggshells on the side as they need extra calcium to support healthy eggshells and formation.

Good luck with them and welcome!

Welcome from Southern Maryland.
Just ask any questions as they arise.
