Hi from another Newbie,

Welcome to BYC

Glad you joined the flock! You got given some good advice here. Fingers crossed your hen will be o.k.

Quote: I want to thank you for all the warm welcomes.

My BO seems to have snapped out of whatever was wrong. (I did follow y'alls advise.) She's runnin' around with the rest of 'em now. As for the rooster; my friend's daughter needed an animal for her FFA class. So, I gave him to her. (Although he'll still stay here with us.)

He is a gorgeous fellow (RIR) despite his over enthusiasm for his job. We've started taking our herd dog with us

when we go into the pen. The dog heals very well, and ignores the chickens. The rooster seems to know to keep his distance. A drastic measure, but it works.

Several years ago, I had a pretty ornery Golden Laced Wyendott, I sold him to a young man for his class project. He put him in the fair the following year, and won FIRST PRIZE in the Poultry

Barn!!

I still haven't psyched myself into processing my older hens. I will, and I have, it's just not my favorite thing to do. I'm planning on

ordering a new flock of chicks. If I'm not mistaken, the hens

should be about ready to start laying next spring, and the roosters will be ready for the freezer before that... Right?

Again, Thanks,
MsRae

Ms. Rae,
I'm piggybacking on your thread as I can't figure out how to start a post on my phone.

Hello all.
I've found this forum invaluable as a newbie with chickens.
I've got 4. They're around 6 months old now.
to the best of my knowledge, I've got a RiR an Americauna, a barred Plymouth rock, and a white crested Polish.
All are hens. Only one is laying, I swear it's the RiR. But the eggs are smallish blue green shelled.
I've been getting one egg a day for about a month now.
They wander about the very overgrown yard, and I've looked for other nests, but can't find any. Jackie (RiR) always lays on the same side of the nesting box.
