How does everyone prevent their water from freezing in the winter?

If you are using a galvanized water container, they sell heated bases that the waterer will set on. The heated base is usually thermostatically controlled so it does not come on until the ambient temperature drops below freezing. They work well. We have two of them. Cost is around $ 40.00.

In the winter time, we move to a smaller waterer, just because we will be checking on it a few times a day. This way, we are not dealing with a full 5 gal waterer and dealing with ice. We don't keep the water heated, as our barn doesn't have electricity. So we do it the hard way. Temps here get pretty low. -20c is common at times, especially if there is a blizzard.

I just hope the web site is secure. When I went to it my anti virus software displayed the site as " Caution ", usually it says " Verified " But it does seem like a very informative site. Thanks again.

That heater looks great. Easy to make and looks effective. We have a hanging waterer with chicken nipples on the bottom, so it wouldn't work for us. We were thinking of wrapping the bucket with heat tape. Any thoughts? Has anyone tried this?
