This thing, whatever it is, is big. The tunnel is easily 4" in diameter and goes down at a 45degree angle so its goung deep. Do you live near any water sources? The size of the hole, plus the fact that this thing hasn't killed chickens makes me think muskrat. If there is no water around, maybe a packrat. I would try putting grocery store eggs into the nests and see if they disappear - but if the chickens are allowed access they may become curious and learn to eat eggs!
