Tapeworms - A few questions

Actually, sometimes if you're looking for a certain drug to give to your chickens and you can't find it made for chickens (there are no a lot of drugs approved for chickens) you can look it up for pidgeons and so far I haven't had to adjust the mg/kg dose on any of the pidgeon meds I've purchased when giving them to chickens.

For me it's all about the mg's per kg needed. The Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook says the Praziquantil dose for tapes in chickens is 10mg/kg, so that would be 4 pills for a five pound chicken. Haven't looked in my other books yet, but when I do, I post what I find. :D

Not saying you're wrong :D, just that I like to know what veterinary literature says before I assume anything.

Pigeon supply houses are a great place to find some of the harder to get drugs.

Hello all of you wonderful backyard chicken helpers! I have an update...

Unfortunately my neighbor was unable to find the medication he usually uses on his trip into town and came back empty-handed. (but out here in the middle of nowhere I do greatly appreciate his effort!) I had a few other errands to run so I decided to go to a different vet than my friend had visited to try to find it. The vet did not have the paste for horses (although he knew what I was talking about, he did not carry it) so I asked about what he had for dogs. I bought the only thing he had with Praziquantel in it. It is a tablet for dogs. Here is the info:

Parol T Plus for dogs tablets
each tablet contains:
Prazicuantel 50mg
Pamoato de pirantel 150mg
Fenbendazol 160mg

Now let's debate dosage and how in the world I'm going to cut these tablets! The dosage listed for dogs is one tablet for 22 lbs of dog. He only had 12 tablets to sell me, so that's all I've got. Kathy said the dosage of Praziquantel is 10mg per 2.2 lbs so half the tab would be 25 mg (or 5 1/2 lbs) but does that work for the other ingredients as well? Or should I go with the package dosage for dogs which would be 1/4 tab? And assuming I still redose in 10 days?

Hoping we can make this stuff work.
What an adventure!

Wow, you can get some amazing drugs in Mexico! I think you'll be fine giving 1/2 a tab, but let me double check the pyrantal... Fenbendazole is in the normal range. Remember that for some reason chickens get medications at a higher rate than dogs, cats, horses, goats etc. FWIW, when I give a single dose of fenbendazole I give a 5.5 pound hen 125mg.

Kathy,
Phew, glad it sounds like this can work. Thank you again for your amazing help -- so, so appreciated! One last question, is the 1/2 tab good for the younger chickens, goose and turkey as well or should I go with a 1/4 tab for the non-adult birds?

I think I'm going with the "crush it up and mix it with a soft food" route of delivery.

Thanks again and many blessings!

I use they same mg/kg on all of them... No reason to give less just because they're young. Smaller, yes, smaller ones would get less. Make sense?
