I've only had chickens for a little over a week now, but it seems like whenever I excitedly tell people about my chickens I get negative responses. I've gotten everything from confused stares to outright mockery. I don't think it's weird or crazy or dirty or strange or any of the other things I've heard thus far. In fact,I have yet to receive any kind words or encouragement. Is this common? I'm starting to lose my diplomacy on the issue but before I start lashing out I want to read other people's experiences. Please share?

I mean c'mon! They're adorable! Plus they provide breakfast!

just dont tell anyone anymore if all you get is negative...her in the upper midwest those responses would be uncommon if never...jeff

I share anyways! It's not uncommon anymore for me to go places and people ask me "what's with the chickens?" I just share as excitedly as ever. I love all my critters and I don't mind if some people think it's strange. I live in the country and most of the people I know from the past live in suburbs or the city so it seems to kind of shock them.

Plus I never hear complaints when I share our extra eggs. In fact that's what helps turn the tide. Most people compliment my hens tasty, super orange yolked eggs :)

Don't mind other people

they share their interests, you share yours.

Where I live, it's rural and very wild. The people who live around me insist I'm "inviting" predators by having chickens and they insinuate I am being foolish for having them.

These same folks have small dogs and cats that have, over the years, been picked off by coyotes, bears, mountain lions and bobcats in far greater numbers than chickens. The hypocrisy abounds.

Here in Louisiana, most people think it's cool to have chickens. Just place a nice egg basket on your kitchen countertop- when people ask, just say, "oh- those are fresh eggs from my chickens- they're the best."

Happened to me, too. I got everything from "why??" To "ewww chickens stink." Hardly anyone was encouraging. Just do your thing, and don't care if they like it.

I've had someone call me a "crazy bird lady" because I was telling her how much I enjoy my little flock. It's funny because if I treated my birds badly the same people who call me "crazy" for loving them would be upset.

I've decided no matter what you do people will have an opinion so you might as well do what makes you happy!
