Hey y'all! I have 2 babies! One Barred Rock and one Delaware Plymouth Rock. They are around 6 months old and I'm hoping they start laying soon. One problem..... My barred rock thinks she's one of the ducks and ignores the other chicken. Any info on how to start fermenting food for their better health and good eggs I'd appreciate!!! My daughter plans on showing for 4H and we want healthy big girls! I have no idea where to even start! Right now I currently free feed them dry layer feed. Help a mama out!!!!

There is a lot of information about FF here on BYC. Here is a link to the thread I've been reading...

And here's a very good blog post that sums up a lot of the information about what it is, why it's good for birds, how to do it, etc....

I've recently become interested in trying this too so I've been trying to read as much about it as I can (and that subject means a whole LOT of reading

I have fermented cabbage.... I clean everything with vinegar... wipe it down with a wetted paper towel... add the feed to a cleaned bucket... cover with water and cover the bucket with a clean towel.... in a few days, fermenting should start... keep in a moderately warm spot...

Morning Dave,

Hope this is an ok question...is the cabbage for you (like sauerkraut maybe?) or for your birds?

Funny story: My ex-MIL tried to ferment cabbage one time so she would have sauerkraut. She put everything in several large crocks down in her basement, tightly fitted the lids, then left town on a long vacation. Oh it fermented all right...blew the tops right off all the crocks and she came home to find it everywhere!

Hey YaksChicks, It's me, LindaB220, I'm the one that sold you the Delaware (not Plymouth Rock, different breed).

Oh the joys of fermentation. Tightly fitted lids has been the culprit in many a disaster.
