I have 4 chickens 2 are white leghorns and 2 black australorps. The are all about 5 months old. The leghorns are laying good eggs everyday. The black australorps have only laid a few eggs and they are soft. Do the chickens need to mature more or is there a problem with the food ?

Are they on layer feed and are you giving them oyster shells free choice? Oyster shells usually help mine when their eggs are soft, and if she is just starting to lay it could be that her system hasn't worked out all the kinks yet.

Glad you joined us!

Soft shelled eggs are often due to a lack of calcium, but they can also be due to "kinks" in a new hen's laying system. If you aren't already, start feeding them layer feed and offering free-choice oystershell. That should take care of any calcium problems. If given time, your pullets' egg laying systems should start functioning normally.

Feel free to ask any other questions you have! We're all here to help.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

BantamLover X2 Young layers have to get their egg laying machines in gear yet. They can lay all kinds of funky eggs at first. And definitely get them on layer and oystershell. Go easy on the treats too so they eat as much calcium enriched feed as possible now. They will eventually work the kinks out.

Enjoy your flock and all those first eggs!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3, soft eggs are pretty common with new layers as they get their systems straightened out.

X4 that new layers lay off-chart eggs frequently. Make sure they have calcium.
