I have about 1/4 acre would love for girls to be able to peck in the yard while I am home. I do have 4 ft high fences and the first day, I was witness as to how high they can jump when they tried to jump out of the run but ran into celing. Will they naturally go towards those areas and try to go over or just out of fear?

I think chickens, like all animals, truly believe the grass is greener on the other side. If you put them in a 4 foot fence without a top they will fly over. I have 6 foot pens, and I have birds fly out on a regular basis. Some breeds are less likely than others, but they all will do it eventually. You could clip wings to prevent it.

It is surprising how high a young chicken can jump. I have 4 foot fences around the 3/4 acre they use to forage. I have seen some of them on the fence, but not have had more than one wind up outside. They have plenty to keep them busy inside the fence. I don't expect them to leave voluntarily.
