Summer and Winter Watering...

I am wanting to set up new watering system for our new chickens.

What we are wanting to do:
-Watering cups (hooked up to PVC pipe like nipples) during the warmer months
-Then transfer over to the watering jugs for the freezing months

Will the chickens adapt well to this?

Is it a bad idea to do this?

This is the watering jug that I currently have... and want to switch to the cups for warmer months.
 
They'll figure it out. You may want to leave the big waterers out with a bit of water in them when you're switching over to the Summer cups (just in case it takes them a little bit to remember how to drink from them.
 
Yes, they will figure it out. I've experimented both ways with our chickens...Way #1 is to take away all water sources except for the new system, Way #2 is to leave both the old and new water systems in place to let them transition. The only way that seemed to work was Way #1. Otherwise, some chickens would take to the new system and others would stay with the "tried and true" of the old system. Usually all the birds would have it figured out within hours. Chicks usually figure it out in minutes. It might be easier on them to do the switch before it gets real hot so they don't go thirsty for too long in the heat.
 
Sweet. Thanks for your help. We will be making the switches as soon as the freezing starts and stops so we don't bust any of the PVC lines that we'll have. Surely won't have them going without water. We're in Middle TN so we have a nice easy transition period for this.
