Lining the Bottom of the Nest Box ???

Could you put something under the tote or raise it off the ground a bit? If you want to insulate to keep eggs warm, you could set the tote down on a couple of bricks and put wood shaving/straw under it. That would keep the eggs warm, if that's the main concern. Scratching to the bottom of the tote is different, mine do that, too. Maybe go deeper with the bedding with some way that she cant scratch it out onto the ground?

Ahhh they'll be ok.....no colder than the roosts.

That's why I like straw in the nests, less likely to get scratched down to the wood and it stays in the nests, but they still do scratch all the way thru sometimes.

The thing I dread about winter laying is frozen eggs, luckily I work from home so can gather often.

I use clean sand with DE mixed in and put straw on top.
What is "DE" I'm a newbie

Diatomaceous earth consists of fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelledalgae. It is used as a filtration aid, mild abrasive in products including toothpaste, mechanical insecticide, absorbent for liquids, matting agent for coatings, reinforcing filler in plastics and rubber, anti-block in plastic films, porous support for chemical catalysts, cat litter, activator in blood clotting studies, a stabilizing component of dynamite, and athermal insulator.
