Gonna try Incubating

Look how much you have learned!! THAT is worth a lot!!!

IT does work better to have the fan direcly on the light. THat is how mine is set up too. GOood luck-- my fingers are crossed for ya!

Booyakasha! I just did the one week candling, and only two of nine were bad. Could see the embryos moving even. So my incubator is a success so far, and the refrigerated eggs (2wks+ @ 40 degrees) are good too. I suspect the two I lost were directly under the heat lamp the first night, before I moved the thermostat.

I'm so excited that my sweet departed Buff Orpington's eggs are viable. :) Looking forward to some "Red Orpingtons".

First batch was a success. I now have five little chicks, four BO crosses and one RIR. It was an amazing experience watching them hatch. I helped two of them open because one was sideways in the egg, and the other egg I had superglued a crack. All appear completely healthy, and hatched right around the 21 day mark.

Well done! That's a great result. So the four BO crosses are from your dear deceased BO? Now you can always tell people that it's possible to hatch eggs from the fridge as well (some don't think it's possible!)

Yup, they were uncovered in the fridge (we take the lid off the egg trays since we're adding eggs daily), and we're never turned or touched for between one and two weeks. Our fridge is a new Samsung and keeps things really cool. When Buffy died my wife threw out the last week of her eggs before I thought about incubation, so I'm sure none of the eggs were less than a week old. All eggs were: A) Refrigerated uncovered, B) Never moved, and C) More than one week old.

I only had 7 of Buffy's eggs, and five hatched, so that's pretty good considering. But I actually dropped the thermometer on two of them and crushed the shells significantly (both of those made it to lockdown thanks to superglue, but only one hatched). So if I had not crushed those I am pretty certain all but one would have hatched.

Ironically, I incubated three perfectly fresh, never refrigerated, RIR eggs and only one hatched.

Congrats on such a successful hatch! Those are adorable babies. I see a lot of people state, with conviction, that it is not possible to hatch eggs from the fridge. But it absolutely is possible! So glad you got some babies from your lost hen.
