What have your experiences been with hatching Shipped Button Quail Eggs?

So I am on day 2 of incubation with 49 button quail eggs. This is my first time hatching shipped button quail eggs, so I am nervous that not many eggs will hatch. Since candling is hard to do on such small dark eggs, I guess I will have to wait out the 16 days and see what hatches! Does anybody have button quail candling photos? What have been your experiences hatching shipped button quail eggs?

I know how exciting it is to begin hatching and raising birds but this is best time to check that excitement for just a few weeks and it'll pay dividends. Shipped eggs already have so many influencing factors that you'd be much better suited to let these hatch and then experiment with candling and such on eggs from your own birds that will be readily available in just a couple months after these hatch. As you hatching skill with quail develops you will be able to interact with the eggs more and cause little or no detriment.

Shipped eggs can suffer from many setbacks due to the number of times and ways they are handled. If left upside down too long there may be damage air sacks. They may have experienced a very wide range of temperature and humidity depending on how far they've gone. They may have been xrayed which can kill many or all of the embryos. Best to give these eggs every chance and then you won't be disappointed waiting around for your next batch if you made a mistake with these. Button quail eggs hatch no better or worse than any other quail. Hatch rate of fertile eggs is most affected by the skill of the of person incubating. If you aren't careful it's easy to get 0 but I've also seen a beginner get a 99% hatch rate on 100+ shipped eggs.

I usually set 80-120 eggs a week through most weeks in spring and summer and I don't candle any of them ever. My hatch rate is always 70-90% on my eggs and sometimes higher depending on what line of birds I'm hatching. I touch the eggs upon collection, again upon setting them, and for the last time when I transfer them to the hatcher (most hobby breeders use the same incubator for incubation and lockdown I built mine myself and have them set up differently). The less times you handle them the less times you can screw them up is the way I look at it. If I run both trays of my bator at the same time I do have to candle so I can be sure I have enough space in the hatchers for 200+ eggs.

Here is a site that provides great info on buttons and the person who runs the site has actually written a couple of books on them. Remember Chinese painted quail are monogamous and should be kept in pairs with the same mate for life.

Also always wash your hands before handling the eggs and never wash the eggs. They have a natural coating that protects them from bacteria intrusion and washing them or touching them with soiled hands can damage it. This coating is called the bloom.

Okay! Just to clarify I have hatched chicken eggs and button quail eggs in the past. This is just my first time attempting to hatch shipped button quail eggs. They are so tiny!! I am glad most of the eggs made it to me in one piece!

Any other stories about hatchibg shipped button quail eggs? I just did a candling 4 of the eggs where clear, I am hoping some will hatch!!! I have such bad luck with shipped eggs!!

I ordered 50 over the summer. The seller mailed me 55 eggs, two were cracked on arrival and I accidentally broke one myself, so 52 eggs went in the incubator. I believe 32 eggs hatched which I thought was pretty good for my first ever mailed eggs. That said, only a small fraction survived to adulthood and I'm certain it's all my fault. I lost the majority of them when their water ran out while I was at work and I came home to so many already gone and several more already on their way out. It was heartbreaking, but it was a tough learning experience. It was my first time hatching so many babies and I guess my plan for water just didn't work. I lost a couple more when I started turning down the temperature in their brooder. I'm not sure if I was lowering the temperature too fast or if it was another factor that did them in. The poor things are so fragile. But those that did make it are all doing great! I only wish I could have done better for the others.

Anyone have experience with strombergschickens quail eggs? How many did you orger and how many of them hatched? how many survived? i ordered 22 about a week and a half ago and got no respond. how long did you take yours to get to you? im really want my quail

Give it a little time. Strombergs is only run by a couple people and they are just that, people. They get overloaded at work just like we all have.

I just hatched 16 lil button quail. These were shipped eggs and yes the candling is rough. I gave up on the candling and just let them all ride until hatch. Ended up with 16/24 hatching.
