HELP Please! A vaccination question.

I just ordered 15 chicks from purely poultry and they should be here in the next couple of days. I spoke to a girl on the phone about getting the Mareks vaccine for them and she said since there have never been chickens on my property I don't need to get it.
Well, I didn't think about it then but I'm borrowing a friends chick brooder to start them in and it clearly has had many chicks in there before.
Are my chicks going to be okay in there or am I in trouble?

I have heard that if you to use medicated food then you would not have to worry about vaccine. I think I have read it in a book about chickens, I did not do any vaccination for my chicks because of that and never had any problem.
 
So you just used the medicated feed? What if you are trying to be as natural as possible? I still want healthy chickens but I'm trying to avoid as much unnatural stuff that I can.
 
In my opinion, by the time your chicks will be on medicated feed only for couple of weeks, the medication will be out of their system long gone by the time they will be laying. Also you can supply them with a little meshed and no shell cooked egg and when they will be couple of weeks old you can add some freshly chopped greenery to their diet.

You folks are talking about two separate things.

She didn't mention it in the article, but other articles say the virus is easily killed by freezing and thawing.

If the person you're borrowing the brooder from ever had Marek's in the flock, they'd most likely know it and you shouldn't use the brooder. If they had a healthy flock, you're good to go.


Medicated feed has no impact on Marek's disease. In the US, anyway, the medication in feed in amprolium. It's not an antibiotic or antiviral, it's a thiamine blocker to prevent the parasite cocci from overloading a young bird.
 
Honestly I would still get them vaccinated. Mereks is so highly contagious it's crazy. It's a disease you want to stay clear of. I am not positive but medicated feed I think only aids in coccidiosis, not Mereks. There is no cure for MD and the vaccine is not guaranteed. Good luck in whatever you decide.

FYI..if I ever want to expand my flock...I can only get chicks that are vaccinated due to a possibility of my current chickens having or being carriers of MD. They came from a hatchery too.
