HI, I got ducks today to add to my chickens and when the owner picked up one of the drakes it struggled so much the owner accidentally broke the drakes leg. I felt so bad as he was going to kill the drake otherwise, that I brought the drake home. there is an obvious break at the knee joint. I can feel one bone that is broken just above the knee and he is unable to stand on it. I have read other posts with the storey's guide recommendations. I would have to use something larger than popsicle sticks, My question is should I splint it straight from the hip to the ankle, or should it be splinted with a bend at the joint? Any help would be appreciated. This was a hard intro to ducks. The other drake and 2 hens are resting in a broody box so they can adjust to the new home. Thanks in advance.

I wish I could help you. Fractures can be complicated things. One of my ex-batts (hens) ended up with a leg fracture just above the knee, and the vet deemed it inoperable due to the location. In her case, the fracture was not hugely obvious as on your drake, more of a greenstick, I think. Eventually, he said, her femur would fuse to the tibia and she would walk peg-legged.
He gave me an off-label drug to help with her pain and inflammation. Meloxicam, 0.1cc I believe It did not heal nearly as quickly as expected, and I regret not having done more to boost her calcium levels to hasten repair.
I think it would be hard to know how to splint the leg without an x-ray, but you'd have a 50% chance of doing it right, and perhaps a 0% chance of doing harm (???). I hope others here can give you better advice.

Thanks for the encouragement. We are going to try and see if we can help. I have some splinting material to work with. I will also add some asprin to his water for pain and maybe some calcium for bone development. I will keep posted. Thanks.
