We're newbies at raising chickens. My daughter raised them as her 4-H project. We have a hen that has started laying lighter eggs. - see picture. We had a sick hen with a severe eye infection, and I thought it was her that way laying them. She died last week, and we've gotten three more light eggs. I've not noticed one hen acting funny, so I'm baffled. I'm afraid to eat them, for fear she is sick and I've thrown them out. Any ideas? The brown is the norm, and we get a lighter tan. We have 5 RI reds & 2 buff brahmas. You can see that they started spotted, then got lighter, and are now almost white.

Frequently if hens have been laying for a long period of time their eggs will become lighter in color. This sometimes precedes a molt or break in the egg laying process. After their 'break' the darker color of the eggs will return. As long as the eggs appear fine when you crack them, they should be fine for eating.

Thanks! They've been laying since about July. It's getting colder here, so I expect it to slow down. They were hatched in March, so they are still young.

The brown one is not, but it is a model of what all the eggs were looking like before we started seeing the lighter ones - however, something to think about is - I do have two buff brahmas and they lay a lighter colored egg anyway.

This is what I'm getting now out of one of my hens.

This is what I was getting out of all of my hens last week.
They are all older than 1 year and are all red sex links. The lighter egg in the back of the carton is like a tea - stain color with dark flecks.

Looks like excessive bloom or calcium coating..could also be a glitchy color coating.
Does it wash off?
Is it rough feeling?
Is she consistently like that?
