Noobie needs help: Onions---when and how to plant.

I use pro-mix. I buy a bale every 2 - 3 years. It's very in-expensive compared to the bags of potting mix, and much better quality. There's a pro-mix product which has an added bacteria or fungus (I forget which) which is supposed to eliminate "damping off" issues. The downside of pro-mix is that it has pearlite in it, which my chickens are attracted to. They go crazy picking the pearlite out of my pots. I assume that it is harmless. But, either way, I go to great lengths to keep them out of it.

A my mother is in Maine, promix must be a Maine- thing. lol . Perhaps I need to visit the better nurseries here for a source. I do remember the product as very light like peat, finely ground. My mother used it to start everything.

Your growing season and climate are similar to ours, short but sweet most years - just short this summer! Onions were small, but got in the ground late because we still had snow on may 1st

WE too raced from a late winter right into summer. A very tough year.

I see a few large green houses around and do think about needing one. THe last one I made was converted into a chicken coop. In theory it could be converted back. lol It has a wooden floor now. and a roof of plywood that could be removed quick-quick. Hmmmmm . . . .
