Frostbite!!!!!

Sorry all I'm in bit of a panic... my big-combed hens have frostbite, I believe I caught it early (it's white?) and I put petroleum jelly on them cause that's all I could find to do in that moment. This happened overnight, I haven't let them out today cause the air outside is cold and wet.

First of all, what can I do?!
Second, how will this heal? Will it heal? Will it fall off?

I'm not sure how to heal it, but just be prepared it may fall off. My rooster lost the tips of his comb last year, but he's surviving fine that way this year.
 
Vaseline did not work for me either 3 years ago and I have a winter dubbed Rooster. Go get some Bag balm in the green tin.



It does not rub off and gets waxy as it gets cold. You'll also need to be sure you are well ventilated. No frost on the windows, extra moisture removed etc.

Large comb breeds are susceptible to frost bite. Cushion combs are generally best for cold sub-zero weather. You may see the frost bite heal if it is superficial. If deeper tissues are affected it will swell, blacken then fall off. It is best to keep the areas clean with soap and water and apply bacitracin or neosporin (without pain reliever or "caines" is important to note on the label).
 
Ooo I'll have to pick up some of that. It's cold earlier than usual and I'm sure they'll appreciate all the protection they can get. :)
 
Is it freezing by you already bogtown? We've already hit 10 degrees with the windchill in the negatives. Yuck.
 
Sorry for my ignorance - we just started keeping chickens (were given an established flock) - do I need to pre-emptivly put bag balm on their combs and feet? I don't think their previous owner did.
