Hi friends,
One of our RIR's was shy about coming out of the coop a few mornings ago. Her comb was grayish on top, but since has improved somewhat. Her toes were kinda swollen, with feathers sticking to them, and red lines as if bleeding but I haven't seen blood. They still look like that, only slightly improved.

That week had been a cold snap, from previously 50, even 60-ish days to 45-degree days and below 30 at night. But this was the 6th night of that, and the following day started warming and has stayed that way.

A few days previous, I noticed white lines down her butt, and lately yellowish. She mostly holds her tail way down, feathers puffed out, walks around slow, and hides under the coop a lot. Still has an interest in eating and drinking, but not a lot.

Ruby is 2 1/2 years old and has always been brave and the one to jump the electric fence and hang out until we put her back in. But she definitely hasn't been outside the fence for some months.

Does anyone recognize these symptoms? I thought of mild frostbite but that doesn't explain the diarrhea. The 12 other hens are just fine and everything normal. Thanks a million for any help you can give!

We do not have an avian vet here (living on a island in NW WA).

I apologize, having taken lots of pics yesterday I lost them trying to get them into my computer. Will try again tomorrow when it's light.

There can be many reasons for diarrhea such as worms, intestinal infections, and vent gleet among others. If she hasn't been wormed recently, then I would give her Valbazen 1/2 ml orally and repeat in 10 days. Deworming the others would be a good idea. Pictures of the legs would help. Check her for lice and mites as well. Here is a good link for Valbazen: http://www.kvsupply.com/valbazen-su...6&cadevice=c&gclid=CMrjqJu9isICFW5p7Aodn3oAHw

Eggcessive, thank you! I actually heard about an avian vet on the island and should be able to contact her tomorrow. If she thinks it's worms I'm sure she'll have the remedy on hand, so that saves some time. Ruby's still holding the same, not happy but not worse. I sure appreciate this forum...

Just to record it, turns out Ruby has an infection which caused the diarrhea, and water retention leading to the swollen sore feet. The infection was apparently caused by an egg that went the wrong way, like an ectopic pregnancy in a human. The wonderful avian vet took some excess fluid out of her belly after giving her an antibiotic shot for the infection.

Today she is already much better, not hiding under the coop but acting more normal with the other hens. Now we have to give her antibiotics by mouth through a syringe for a few nights - wish us luck. Thanks!

Yes, that's just what it is. She's now living in my bathroom and getting her antibiotics in a dish of scrambled eggs in the morning, which she scarfs up completely. Trying to use a syringe was too traumatic for both of us. Reading up on this, I know she may not last long even if she gets by this illness, but we want to buy her some time at least. Again thanks for responding with help!
