Very sorry to hear about your poor hen Ja

i lost one of mine last night to but mine was do to the cold i believe. No obvious blood or injury and it was a juvenile, fully feathered but only about 2/3s the size of the adults.

i'm also having a horrible problem keeping enough not frozen water out there for them.

I just started bringing my water in at night. I usually do that around 11pm and return it by 8am. They are sleeping then anyway. But during the day, it's a problem. I'm hoping that wasn't why she died because I'll feel really badly. I'm going to get something to put in in the water to prevent it from freezing. I've seen some really neat designs here.

Welcome to the flock. Do you have any idea what type of predator has been taking your birds? Were they free ranging or attacked in coop/run? Maybe the folks on the predator threads can suggest ways to protect your birds.

They were free ranging. Only once was there any evidence left. When the Welsumer rooster was taken there was a mess of feathers. He was taken at night and was within feet of the summer pen. We've never seen evidence of a predator trying to get into the coop.
