Hi all I am new to this site but have already found some useful info on here I am located in australia and I have 2 Isa brown hens 2 faverolle hens 2 white leghorn hens 1 barnevelder hen and 1 barnevelder rooster 1 rhode island red hen 1 black australorp hen 6 chicks so far 4 muscovy ducks and 4 ducklings. The issue I'm having is with my australorp I noticed she was always hiding in the coop and does not come out to free range with the others so I was checking her over today and she has a lot of droppings caked onto her butt and I lifted one of her wings as I saw stuff caked on her wings and she has a hole under her wing on the side of her breast it is the same on the other side in the exact same spot I'm wondering if it could be the rooster doing it to her he is a large barnevelder I have also seen the muscovy drakes try to mount some of the chickens (even the rooster which was quite funny to watch) I feel so sorry for her and I'm not sure what to do

Poor girl is really getting mauled and abused by rooster and maybe the drake as well. She needs them kept away from her. If she gets infected from her wounds, she could end up dying. It's not a joking matter. Drakes can kill a chicken by trying to breed her - ducks do not have combatable "machinery" for a chicken. Roosters overbreeding a hen can also end up killing them. A rooster can handle 10 hens, any less and he will damage or maim them badly.

If you don't intend to hatch chicks or sell fertile eggs, you don't need a rooster. Your hens wi ll be very happy NOT to be bothered by a rooster. They will have less stress and probably lay more eggs because of that. If you cannot get vet attention to this hen, please post in full detail & photos at "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread. Hopefully someone there can tell you how best to help her heal.

Drumstick Diva X2 Never keep a Drake with chickens. They can kill hens trying to mate with them. And with the rooster as well, this bird is suffering.

Get her separated and get her cleaned up. Wash her and completely dry her off. Use a saline solution on her wounds and some neosporin. Keep her warm if she is cold. Try to rehab her in the flock in a cage so the others don't forget her and mixing her in goes easy. But remove the duck and keep the rooster away from her for a while. Let her heal. Like Drumstick Diva mentioned, don't keep a rooster if you really don't need one for chicks. The hens will be so much more happy without a rooster around.

When she is ready to go back into the flock make sure you have several feeding and watering stations so she is not bullied out of eating and drinking properly.

Thanks for the advice she is in the coop with 2 other chickens that are sitting on eggs and the mumma duck and ducklings she is safe in there. I don't particularly like the rooster as he has attacked me a few times I'd happily get rid of him but love having baby chicks so do my 3 young kids. The two drakes did not bother the chickens until the 2 female ducks started sitting on eggs. I will certainly separate the ducks from the chickens thank you all for the help
