How to make your eggs taste better?

Hello everyone, I recently started getting eggs from my 3 barred rocks and I LOVE the taste of the eggs. The yolks are an average yellow and the whites are excellent but I was wondering if I could feed them something not too expensive to add some color and maybe a little more flavor. Their main staple is Nutrena Layer crumbles. During the summer they found all kinds of bugs and lizards to eat, along with most of the green things in my yard. I give them food scraps from the kitchen that is usually vegetables but sometimes pasta or bread (Very seldom) or cereal (nothing sugary). So, what do you give your chickens that enhances egg quality, flavor, or color?

I think our eggs are delicious anyway but this summer we grew a ton of various squash (butternut, buttercup, spaghetti, calabazza, acorn, etc.) and it seems to me that when the girls eat our surplus, either raw or cooked, that their yolks are somewhat darker. Also, in our mixed flock some of our chickens just seem to lay eggs with a little bit darker yolks than others.

I've read that chickens that eat Marigold flowers will have darker yolks. I don't know this by personal experience because our girls won't eat them.

Be interesting to read if other folks are finding they get darker yolks feeding a particular food.

Squash? Interesting. I usually grow peppers and cucumbers in my garden but didn't get many this year. I had heard about marigolds as well but never knew anyone who tried it. Love the quote btw, I read all of his books when I was a kid.

Squash and peppers did the best out of everything we planted this year.

Re: the quote, thanks for noticing. I read his books when I was younger too...good stuff!

Greens seem to do it for my birds. Lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, things like that. A flake of alfalfa hay works well also, and is a good boredom buster. Plain ol grass helps, too, but is hard to find in the winter around here.

Greens are plentiful around here and the girls have been eating plants all summer. I will try the alfalfa if I see any, thank you.
