Hi,

Just introducing ourselves. We are a family of four with 2 pre-teenage girls and we are just about to start out with a flock of 4 ISA Browns at around 8 weeks of age.

Last weekend was spent preparing the run for the chickens. After reading many threads on this forum we decided to go with sand as the base for the run (about 3-4" deep).

The coop is scheduled to arrive (flat packed kit) this week and we will be setting it up over the weekend. It will be placed on concrete pavers with a border of 4" high 2x4 running around the inner perimeter with sand used as the base for the coop as well.

I've found the info on this site extremely helpful and hope to gain some more info as we go down the journey.

I think you will enjoy using sand. I am a huge fan of sand and use it in the coop, run and even in the nest boxes!! Very easy to maintain, helps to repel flies, absorbs poop smells and the thing I like about it is you can hose it down in the summer on those hot days and it keeps their feet really cool. Cool feet mean cool birds. Nice coop!!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chooks is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chooks. Isa Brown is one of many labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links (a very prominent label in Australia), which are produced by crossing a red gene rooster with a silver gene hen. Not only can the resulting offspring by sexed by color from hatching, they are egg laying machines, outlaying either parent breed. It's one of the interesting quirks of hybridization.
