Hi all.

I'm planing to build a new run in the new year and was thinking of going with deep litter. I have read a few other threads on here and other sites but only really found people saying they used it in the coop and nothing about in the run.

My question is can it be done in the run and is there anything I should look out for? I know I've got to keep an eye on the top and make sure it's not to wet, anything else I should look out for?

Thanks
Tim

I would cover the run area that you want as a deep litter. I notice that when it rains a lot, the exposed area in my deep litter coop gets kinda mucky and icky. Other than that I like it so far, been doing it for a year. I just keep tossing new loads of dry leaves in the run and it doesnt smell like ammonia or poop. Just earthy and like dry leaves. I even scan my neighbours garbage for bags of dry leaves.
I wouldnt put hay or a lot of dry grass in it, that seems to get stinky quick. The best thing that works for me I found was small dry 'fluffy' leaves. This is my coop: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/three-bahamamamas-in-an-old-tile-crate. I use beach sand in my night coop.
