Thanx. What would a welsummer roo over a barred rock hen look like

I've never bred that particular Black Sex Link and it's not one bred by hatcheries, but I suspect it would look pretty similar to the standard BSL; black with brown feathers around the neck area for the hens, and barring for the roosters.

Michael,

Thanks for all your replies. You seem to know a lot about the Black Sex Link hen. I'd like to breed some of these next year. However many people have told me there are many different crosses you can do to get Black Sex Links. Could you tell me some of the best crosses to get a lovely, good egg-laying Black Sex Link.

Thanks, Ian

You're welcome. Probably the best BSL cross is the one used by virtually all hatcheries, which is either a RIR or Production Red rooster crossed with a Barred Rock hen. This is the same cross that the laying houses use for their brown egg layers. It's possible that another cross might be just as good, but the RIR X BR has been the tried and proven standard in the chicken industry for many years.
