Greetings all,
My wife and I are going to be starting a flock this spring. We have decided to start with some barred rock chicks. We will be keeping eggs and harvesting some chickens for meat.
Our main concern is we do not want to have to buy 24+ chicks to start. Could anyone give me tips on where I could order 12 chicks or less. We are only planning on keeping 3-4 egg layers, so anymore than 12 to start would be overkill for us.
We live in NW, and are looking to get chicks in March/April depending on when winter breaks.
Thanks in advance for any tips/help.

Welcome to BYC!

Murray McMurray is a long time hatchery in Webster City, IA. When they do mail orders, you have to get larger numbers of chicks (15-25) but you could call them and see if they allow customers to pick up smaller numbers. 515-832-3280 is their phone number. They may not be open due to the holidays but you could probably reach them Monday, Jan. 5th.

You can also go to the IA state thread and ask if anyone there knows of a breeder close to you:

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Nice to have you join us!

X2 on NorthFLChick. Meyer Hatchery and MyPetChicken are good, dependable, hatcheries too.

Here are some links on caring for your chicks once the hatch and one on where to find further hatchery info

Welp Hatchery which is located in Bancroft, IA, in my book, is a really great choice. it just depends on how many you want. here is the link to the chicken page.

on the right you will see a box with the minimum order. hopefully it will work out!!

Thanks, I am only 15 miles from Webster City but was not sure if self pickup was available there. Will check next week

Good luck!

We got our last bunch of chicks from them and have been very pleased with our birds (plus their customer service was very helpful). Keep us posted on what you end up with.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've purchased chicks from Murray McMurray on several occasions (including Barred Rocks), and have been happy with their birds and service. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your BAs.
