Should I be concerned?

Tending to my chickens
I found quite a few spots of blood on the wall of our chicken coop this morning. The blood was fairly fresh because it was still partially wet and bright red, so I picked up every chicken and inspected them. None of them had any sign of blood on them anywhere. There was enough blood on the wall that I thought it would be noticeable on a chicken. The blood was at heights and in spots as though a comb or wattle was bleeding, but again, no one had any sign of blood. Should I be concerned about this?

Hello,

I would be somewhat concerned...and would pay close attention to them over the next couple of days.

Most likely the cause of this was due to either pecking or an attack from a predator. In either case, it is important to key a close eye on what is happening. I would strongly recommend you do a walk-through of the coop/run each morning and evening for the next week or two. I would be on the lookout for any additional blood or anything which seems out of the norm.

Ok, I will keep an extra eye on them. I guess the thing that puzzles me most is how none of them showed any blood. There's snow on the ground and the only footprints around the coop are mine and some bunnies. I'm out in the coop at least twice a day and I should be able to check every few hours for any new blood.

Most likely it happened during the process of egg laying...likely nothing to be concerned with...and will go away on it's own. If you do notice more blood (and can tell which one it came from) I would recommend you separate that bird until you have a clear idea what is happening. There is nothing worse than a disease entering your flock...
