My friend raises chickens and said I should raise some too. I told her I need to know what kinds of chickens I should get. She likes Bantams. She said I should try raising some. Any other suggestions?

I personally love silkies! They are a great little birds with great temperments. Bantam Cochins are great as well. So many options. You can find a lot of info on all kinds of breeds on this forum. If you have questions, we are here to help!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Bantams are small little birds and are very fun to keep! I like the larger breeds but this is just my preference.

Here is a couple of websites on the different breeds along with our breeds pages here on BYC to help you with some decisions...

Definitely stop by our learning center too for all kinds of good reads on getting started with chickens, building the coop, raising the chicks and keeping your adult flock happy, healthy and safe from predators...https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

If you have any questions along this new journey, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

I'm looking over the learning center now. I know chickens are allowed in my town (well that could depend on the person. The names around here run the town laws and regulations or not) because someone in town has some chickens in a coop.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Bantams are small and easy to raise, and some like Silkies and Cochins are very friendly, calm, and gentle birds. However, the drawback to bantams is that they are poor layers with small eggs. If egg production is important to you, there are several standard sized breeds that are good layers and have very calm and gentle personalities (potential lap pets). Breeds that are good layers and have a well deserved reputation for being friendly and gentle include Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Sussex, and Faverolles. Australorps are the best layers on this list. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Are there any breeds to avoid? Super noisy? Aggressive? Can you put multiple breeds of hens in one coop? Or do they have to all be separate?

I, personally stay away from Leghorn roosters. I do b/c they're almost always rather aggressive; you might want to b/c they can be very noisy.
Wyandottes are really friendly and come in bantam. Are you leaving forward bantam or lathe fowl (aka standard breeds)?

Edited to correct my punctuation.
