Hello everyone! I am VERY new to chickens and this forum. I am excited to be a member and to learn anything/everything I can. I'm hoping to start my first backyard flock this spring, so I will be reading, and researching everything I can, and asking tons of questions.

And for my first question.... I would like to start off small, with three chickens and I would like to do a mixed flock. I have a young son and friendliness of the birds is probably #1 on my list. Fresh eggs are of course a benefit, but not the sole reason for my getting chickens, so they do not have to be prolific layers. I was thinking about getting a Buff Orpington, a Plymouth Rock, and a Brahma. Would these three get along well together and be good for a newbie like me? Thanks!

I got Orpingtons and they shyed away from me... but I think I scraed them a little bit lol.

Bramhas are very freindly! I have one and I am working on her, but I can say on my friendliest list is 1st: Bantam Rooster and then her. :)

It depends on how you raise them, but Bramhas have tons of pros to them :
(1) Fluffy Feet and Small Comb = Your ideal cold weather chicken
(2) Friendliest
(3) Good winter egg layer

I have 5 chickens right now..I am about 1hr away from Charlottesville so you might want to get 4 or 5...with the cold winters we've had the past couple years..my dad says it's unusual.

Thanks for the info! I'm also reading that I have to buy 6 chicks at once, so I'm rethinking just getting 3. Maybe I can convince my neighbor to get chickens too and we can go in together :)
 
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Those three breeds will do find together. Orpingtons and Brahmas especially have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle. My children made lap pets of both breeds. Other very calm and gentle breeds are Australorps (excellent layers), Cochins, Sussex, and Faverolles. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you end up getting, good luck with your flock.

I think you picked some great breeds! I love my orps and they make wonderful companion pets as well as egg layers or even meat for the table. Buff Orps or Black Australorps are great breeds....wonderful orps to keep!

What ever breed you choose, enjoy this new adventure!!
