Hello again. Snap our IB peahen is sick. I noticed she'd been a little quiet and not obnoxious like she usually is, over the past few days. Tonight we came home and she was lying on the barn floor. One of her eyes is clouded over and she can't see out of it, but it's not swollen, it's like the third eyelid is down and it's just sort of infected. She's a little snotty from her beak, which she kindly wiped across my face when I caught her.

I put her in a pen with a heatlight, and mixed Baytril in her food with a little applesauce, but she hadn't touched it last I looked. However, I think it is cause she's just stressed from being handled and confined, as she had gotten up and was trying to eat when I caught her. I'm hoping she relaxes and quits looking for an escape route soon. I have Baytril, Oxytet, Denagard...but I'm assuming Baytril is the best choice?
 
IMNSHO, she really needs to be medicated orally. Baytril is what I would use, and if it's going to work, you will see probably see improvement in 12-48 hours.

OK. I just hate the fighting, struggling thing. She's not at all tame. I've been working on the two peahens for years, trying to tame them up, and they just won't. Our peacocks are much tamer It's weird. I will see if I can some Baytril into her today one way or another.

I also have peafowl, which you already know, any yes, they can be harder to handle/treat than chickens, but oral dosing is often the only way to treat them. :D

She is finally eating at least. So she's learned that if I put a treat next to her on her perch, it's safe to eat. I'm pretty sure I can smuggle the med in a treat, that way, and I can get her to eat the med when I want her to. And I figured out it's Sweetpea, not Snap (this is mostly for my own reference, lol). Sweetpea is older and maybe a little calmer.
 
AND her eye was open and her head feathers perking back up last night thank goodness after just one dose of the Baytril.

Glad she is better... Baytril is an amazing drug and works very fast.

Here he is 8 hours later. Note that I have not wiped his face.







28 hours later - still some swelling that is hard to see in pictures and some clear drainage from nostril.




Chick was 100% after just two shots, but gave two more per the recommendation of a vet.

She's doing better but her eye was closed again this morning. Open now. Still not eating as well as she should be, but I think she's stressed at being confined.

It's plenty cold, too, but I just don't have the resources to bring her inside right now, she's too big.
