Ok so I am having s problem with rats and need some suggestions. First off we have 2 cats that live on our property and wild cats that roam around! They don't help. With that being said our rats are not your normal rats. We live in Central America about 40 minutes out from the major city Guatemala City. They rats are about 4 pounds or bigger. They make there holes in and under the coop no matter how much concrete I fill them with. My chickens are free ranged all the time and locked up at night? I have lost around 20 something chicks in the past month, I'm guessing Bc of the cooler weather and with rainy season around the corner. Any ideas of what I can try. In the coop I have 2 ducks, about 50 hens from all breeds 4 roosters, 3 rabbits that we breed that run free in the coop and quail in a hutch also in the coop!

Have you tried a rodent trap or mongoose traps, like the ones other people in tropical places use to catch mongoose (that attack chickens). You don't want to use poison to get rid of them because you then will have poison dead animals around and if the birds get to it, they can die. That is the only idea I can give you. When I was growing up in Puerto Rico, that is what my father use to catch rats or mongooses. They look like the picture I am attaching:

Hopefully this information will help. You would put the trap in the outside area, not in the coop area. Once you trap them, then you can decide how to get rid of them. Good luck

I realise I'm not going to be helpful, but the size of your rats sounds terrifying!

We have seen one rat that our dog killed, but last night I saw another rat. We have quite large birds, would a rat harm them?

I tried a rodent trap. I was able to catch 2 rats. The problem is there is probably hundreds of them living in the area. The other thing is they are smart and they avoid the trap.
