I have 30 hens and 8 Roosters (whittling down that ratio slowly!) and I just LOVE the warning sound they give when a hawk is nearby. I've heard them bounce this call around before, but today, while I was throwing down some scratch in the afternoon, a HUGE Redtail hawk was obviously flying around. Usually, the crows tip me off, but they weren't around.
The low, warbly, reverberating sound that echoed around the 38 chickens was AWESOME! All of them made it within seconds and were looking up. Very cool.
They don't scatter but watch closely. Since I was there, I ran him off, but these guys are pros without me around!!
Will be keeping a closer eye as this is the biggest hawk I've seen personally...

I knew having a rooster would help warn the flock about Hawks.
I guess (being a new chicken owner as of August!) I didn't know that the sound wouldn't be a loud, high-pitched screech! That's what I thought an alarm would be like. But this is lower and more rumbly than their typical "get off me" shrieks if one is picking on them.
Doubt I'll ever get that sound recorded, but maybe!
So neat!!

Our birds had their first hawk sighting this week! We had never heard the sound before, so we started looking around (and up) to determine why they were sounding their alarms. When we noticed some heading under the coop. We went back to looking up. Sure enough, making a big lazy circle in the sky was a hawk.

The noise our roos were making was a "loud, high-pitched" note, that @sarahandbray mentioned. It made us laugh but also thankful the boys were on their toes, and doing their job.
