Hello chicken folk! One of my girls (I believe it's my Delaware) has started laying "discolored" eggs. As you can see from the pic, it's dark on one end with a "banded", speckled appearance. I have 6 other hens with no issues. Is this something I should be concerned with?
That brown pigment is the last thing put on the egg as it passes down the manufacturing line. Most hen's brown coating is set to spray a nice, even coating on the egg. Some hens, especially those with darker egg genes, seem to be set to splatter instead of spray. It may work itself out over time, or she may always lay distinctive eggs. Many folks like the speckled egg look, they set off the others in the carton nicely. Sometimes you can wash the dark brown off if you scrub a little, so go easy if you like the coloring.
I had a hen who laid OD green eggs with brown speckles (camo eggs), and the brown speckled one was from one of my Welsummer hens, the solid dark one was my other Wellie. ..
