Let's talk pig!

Hello,I currently own & care for zero pigs but want to get some in the future and start breeding preferably a breeding pair of Berkshires or Hampshires is what I will be searching for when the time comes around.But until then I would really love to read and learn more about these fascinating creatures!Please post lots pictures! And I will have a lot of questions for you pig owners!

Hi! I'm no expert on pigs but have 1 myself. I originally brought him home last July because my brother got him and couldn't keep him and he needed to be rescued. I'm a sucker for rescuing animals as with most of the animals I have are rescues. So here's what I know, he was bought for $5 at an auction and the tag on his crate read: "Hi my name is Ike, I am a full grown 1 year old micro pig and would make a good breeder" There were problems with that little bit of information though lol.. Ike was no "micro" pig and certainly no where near full grown..

At the time I wasn't too knowledgeable about pigs. Apart from naming some basic breeds and butchering duroc cross hogs with my dad when I was younger, I was clueless. Ike was quickly renamed to Old Mud, aka Muddy, Mudman, Mudson, etc. It was obvious he was neglected his hooves were so long they were all but curled and he look very malnourished- about 35lbs and he had hardly had any hair on himself.

A lot of people get scammed into buying "micro" pigs that turn out to be not so micro. After about 6 months at the Jedwards resort, Mudman is 1.5 years old and weighs about 150 lbs and has a full woolly black and white coat. And he loves his new home where he free ranges all day long and has chicken and dog companions.

That is such a wonderful you did for him! I love the name too! On a best guess what breed do you think he is really? I will be back later today.

all micro pigs are just mal-nurished pigs, on many breeder websites it even states that they will only stay small if fed "properly" , they mean as long as you starve it it will stay small.

Pot bellies are cool! I want to get some breeders to keep & then eat and or sell the piglets.My family has raised about 4 pigs all tasted great way better then store bought obviously.

To alldembirds that's really sad although I do want to eat the pigs I raise I still believe they should be given absolute best care until that day.Thats how my turkey went too raised her as if she were a dog up to the day she was butchered.

Micro pigs are not a scam, they are out there you just have to find a good breeder. My pigs are all 30-40 lbs full grown. They are not starved, they are out on pasture, get fed pig pellets 2x per day and gets lots and lots of veggies. But people who turn them into house pets tend to feed them the wrong type of foods and that will put extra fat on them just like it does people. Your piggy might like dog and cat food, potato chips, soda, etc.... But that is not considered feeding them right.

Of course! I didn't mean that all micro pigs are scams or that there is no such thing as micro pigs. I just meant that a lot of times naive people buy what they think are micro pigs "as big as a soda bottle" that grow to be full size pot belly pigs. And unfortunately the animals are the ones who have to pay for that ignorance, as mine did. My vet said that he has house visits to a full grown micro pig that weighs 11 lbs, so I think it's all about genetics and proper husbandry to have true micro pigs

Yes, agreed. Too many people have been scammed by the micro mini breeders, you just have to be careful if looking for a true mini and then it's up to you not to make them obese. Healthy yes, obese no.

on that note I would def reccomend having a pig.. they are so smart, interesting, and have great personalities
