My son is showing some roosters at a local show and I was wondering what type of spray is used to make them shine? I have seen others spraying their birds but never knew what it was. Does anyone know?

Nobody????

Some people wipe their birds feathers with alcohol to remove any dust or residue on the feathers. It also evaporates quickly so it won't make the bird appear wet. That's most likely what you saw people spraying.

Anytime you change the natural look of poultry it could be considered FAKING by the Judge and DQ. Why not just wash the Silkie and show natural. Some will spray the Horse Sheen on but this could also be considered FAKING. Don

The first thing that needs to be done is wash them.
To deal with dust that gets on them after that and just before the show wipe them well with one of those "micro-fiber", I think they call them, cloths. The ones that everything attaches to and you don't dare drop on the floor. Sprays, liquids, etc. are nothing but a poor, short term substitute,

We always wash them before show and never use any type of spray on the Silkies. I have only seen it used on the normal feathered birds. I was just wondering what it was and if it actually made an improvement.

Applying products to birds to make them shine or clean them will not get you DQ for faking, a few judges will mark you down if you get out of hand. If you use something to change the color they will DQ you.
The product that people use is call Pink Spray and it is only for hard feathered birds, never for your fluffy type birds. I tried it once many years ago but didn't like it or need it, but I do have friends that use it.
Don is correct in washing your birds with enough time to recover but the rule of thumb is the weekend before the show. A lot of people wash their birds and most should. I don't wash my birds because they are all games and shouldn't need it, plus I am lazy.
